The Butterfly Effect. It’s fundamental to real change in lung cancer.
We believe it’s the small things that we do now that will do big things to improve awareness, diagnosis and care for lung cancer in the future. It’s why we have embraced the Butterfly Effect and taken the Butterfly as our symbol. The team here at theBE will be doing many of the small things and we will encourage you to do them with us, but it’s when you start to do things yourself that this movement will truly take hold.
The Small Things you can do for you and your family
This doesn’t mean train for a marathon or hit the gym 7 days a week, but rather just BE ACTIVE. Take more walks, take the stairs, play tennis, whatever. A healthy active lifestyle will reduce your risk for most diseases, but especially lung cancer.
Yoga poses that open the chest area can help expand your lung capacity. The bridge pose is a good one to try.
Practice deep breathing techniques by focusing on lowering your diaphragm muscles as you inhale. Then expand your ribs and upper chest. When you exhale, do the reverse. Let the chest fall, contract your ribs and then lift your diaphragm muscles to get rid of the last bit of air. This will help you increase lung capacity.
A good chuckle is not only good for the soul, but it’s good for your lungs. When you laugh, you force stale air out of your lungs and allow fresh air to enter.
It goes without saying, that a healthy diet is the key to a healthy life. It is most true with lung cancer because we often find out about it when it’s too late. Include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet and try not to take too many vitamins in pill form. Some research has shown that certain vitamins and antioxidant supplements have been known to accelerate lung cancers. READ HARVARD RESEARCH
LEARN MORE ABOUT RADON
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when the uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It is invisible, odourless and tasteless. When radon is released from the ground into the outdoor air, it is diluted and is not a concern, but in enclosed spaces like you home it can be quietly making you sick. Get your home tested and get a radon detector for you home. Especially if you live in are where radon has been identified as an issue
AVOID CARCINOGENS AT WORK
If your work involves you dealing with toxic materials, take all precautions that your employers provides you (like wearing your mask). Also talk to your doctor about anything further you can do to protect yourself.
DON’T SMOKE, STOP SMOKING, STAY AWAY FROM SECOND HAND SMOKE.
Do we need to say this? Yes we do. Don’t smoke. It’s a major cause of the disease. But now it’s not the only cause, and it’s why need to raise money and awareness. As the number of smokers decline, the instances of lung cancer are not declining with it. This brings about our new dilemma. Because lung cancer is so tied to smoking, and because we have been aware of the effects of smoking for a long time, people are losing sympathy for people who smoke. This means that they losing sympathy for people who have lung cancer, as they probably deserve it because they smoked. There are two things wrong with this. 1. They now more likely didn’t smoke. 2. Nobody deserves to get cancer.
